This is a story

One month into the marriage:

Chapter 1

He walked into the room and saw her brushing her hair, their eyes met through the mirror, they both felt the instant spark and they both ignored it.

She looked beautiful and untouchable, her silence irritated him, she was the one that had betrayed him, yet her doe like eyes made him feel like a heel. Her eyes accused him when she was the one that was guilty, he hated the fact that he couldn’t get her out of his mind and she was driving him insane in that house, around him all the time. He felt like punishing her for making him fall in love with her, NO! He was not in love with her, there was no such thing as love, they were useless words that people used to hide their reality, the world was a cold place, no one cared about anyone, everyone always wanted something. She had snatched his sister’s husband away, he would never have thought that a girl of her morals would have ever behaved in such a way, but then she didn’t really have them did she? He could feel his anger building, he felt like shaking and rattling her until she explained why she had used them, what she saw in that Shyam.

Oh God that was a whole different problem, guilt eat at him till he felt like screaming it all away, he should be angry at her for luring his brother in law into a trap or falling into his trap, whichever it was, that was what he should have her for, instead he was jealous and he burning thinking of her with Shyam, thinking that he walked off and slammed the bathroom door.

She jumped at the slam of the door. She really wished that she could get to grip with what he was thinking, she never knew what was going through his mind, a month back he had destroyed her life, she had never thought that life could be so mean, this was the man that she had been ready to give her heart to, he had broken her dreams, he had made her realise that there was no such thing as a prince charming, his looks had melted her, she had thought that he would declare his love to her, but no he had always just wanted to win. She still remembered how he had blackmailed her into marriage, for him it had been all about winning, he had waited till the last moment before he had thrown in his last playing card, her marriage to him if she wanted her sister’s marriage to go ahead. Her world had turned upside down, at that moment she had hated him, hated the fact that she had ever loved him. All those moments, the bangles he had got her, the kiss on the cheek the flirting, the helping out it had all been a ruse, he had just wanted to get his way, he had wanted to prove to her that she was nothing for him, just an item to be discarded. But why did she feel that there was something more to it all? His eyes held a pain, a hurt that she could not put her finger to, what was going through his mind? How could he hate her so much all of a sudden? She couldn’t understand what had happened to make him the way he was, her heart just would not accept that it was him playing a game, but was she actually right?

He leaned against the bathroom door, he couldn’t get her out of his mind, he couldn’t let go of the fact that Shyam had touched her the way he had, had he made her feel the way he had? Did he make her heart beat fast? Did she go breathless around him as well? He had to have the answers and there was only one way.

Arnav came out of the bathroom and walked towards Khushi, khushi’s nerves got the best of her and she began to walk backwards “Arnav ji....”

He didn’t break eye contact, striding up to her he pushed her against the wall, his hand fisted into her hair, she felt the pain, but she also saw the passion, her heart was racing, how was she supposed to breathe when he looked at her like that? He began by kissing her cheek, he watched her as she closed her eyes, he kissed her other cheek, he felt her fist her hand into his shirt and his heartbeat went into overdrive he pushed her further into the wall and whispered “is this how you felt with him as well?”

It felt like someone had splashed cold water all over her, she pushed him back “WHAT?”

He moved back angry, why had he said anything? Why did he want answers when she was adamant to act as if she knew nothing, he refused to discuss it, her truth would come out soon enough, why should he be the one to force it out of her? She was a liar, she would probably make up a thousand lies and he had wanted to make love to her, to ravish her, he hated himself.

“What did you just say to me Arnav ji?” demanded Khushi “You said that once before, what do you mean?”

“Shut up, I don’t want to talk to you, keep away from me, I hate girls like you, you always think that you can play around and mess up people’s lives, well let me tell you something Khushi Kumari Gupta, your silly games won’t work with me, you can jump wherever you want to!” he started to walk off

“I’m not the one that blows hot and cold every two minutes, you destroyed my life and then you decide to come and touch me, learn to keep away from me Mr Arnav Singh Raizada” she cried out. “I’m not the one that comes near you, I don’t even want to see your face, stop trying to make it seem like I’m the one pursuing you!”

“Khushi, if I wanted you know, I could have you right this minute, you would not be able to do anything about it, but why would I want you when there are thousands like you?” he answered, but looking into her eyes he knew how much he had hurt her, he could see the pain in them and her struggle to hide it, why did he feel culpable when she was the one that had done the wrong thing? He couldn’t think, he had to get away.

Chapter 2

He had so much to occupy him, but her eyes still haunted him as he made his way back from work. He was brooding and he knew it, he couldn’t work out which way to go, his heart refused to believe she was guilty but he refused to let it get in the way of logic. What he had seen was the truth, how could he defer from it? How could he believe she was innocent? If she had been, would she not have pushed him away? And now she was acting as if nothing had happened, like Shyam would not have told her. He knocked on the door and Om Parkash opened it. “Sir should i get you tea or coffee?”

“no” replied Arnav walking past him angrily.

He saw his di at the sofa, she looked worried, things between them were still tense, di was still angry with him, but how was he suppose to tell his di that the father of the child she carried was a cheat? That her husband was messing about with the one girl that he had ever given his heart to. He could not see his sister broken, she was still broken and refused to see reality and now that she was pregnant doing so would only break her. What he really wanted was to take her away from all the pain, to be able to hide her from all the world’s problems. On the other hand he wanted to scream the truth at her, to tell her that her husband was nothing but useless, that he never really loved her, that he wasn’t good enough for her, but he couldn’t not with the baby, what if something happened to it? He could already imagine him the world, his little hand gripping his hand, looking up at him, expecting his uncle to take care of him and his mum, how could he do it to the baby? Everything was so messed up.

He started to walk by “Chote” called out Anjali, “I need to speak to you”.

His heart did a million leaps, his sister wanted to talk to him, she hardly said anything to him now, but what if there was something wrong? Concerned he walked up to his sister, worried for her “is the baby ok di?”

“The baby is fine, I want to talk to you about Khushi, take a seat” she said pointing at the sofa.

Arnav sat down “Di what is it? Why do you want to talk about Khushi to me?”

“Arnav, since the two of you have gotten married I have not seen her smile even once, yes she does all the household chores and she seems to walk around acting as if everything is fine, but there is something wrong, I know you refuse to tell me what it is, but at least try and find out if she is ok, she is no longer the Khushi that we used to know, her parents have shunned her, she has nowhere to go and even Nani ji is angry with her, Chote, if you did take the decision to marry her at least try and make it work, she doesn’t have the guts to meet anyone’s eyes, she hardly talks anymore, what is wrong with her?”

“Di, I don’t know, what do you want me to do? If she doesn’t smile anymore I can’t force her to be happy can I?” saying that, he began to get up, he thought to himself he had messed this up, he had not been able to play the part of the loving husband, he just could not fake it, the few times he had reached out to her, he had forced her hand into his, he could see the disgust in her eyes and it had made him furious that she had probably wanted HIS hand in hers.

“Chote, you know this life is very short, sometimes the decisions we make can impact us like nothing else, sometimes we think we do something that is for the best and it turns out that it was for all the wrong reasons. You do realise that Khushi’s first engagement broke and she still managed to pick up the broken pieces and put things back together again, how hard must it have been for her to break her engagement?”

Arnav looked up surprised “I never knew she was the one to break the engagement” while he thought to himself, huh she probably was too busy roping me and Jija ji around her fingers, he couldn’t believe that she could have been so cheap.

“yes she broke it, do you know chote, the other day I was thinking how strange life can be, she was written in your kismet, otherwise you would never have gotten married, I know it was not done the way we wanted, but it has happened. But what made my heart sad was that importantly I realised that you can have someone with the same name and yet the two people can be so different” she said with tears in her eyes.

“Same names? What are you saying di? Who has the same names?” Arnav asked looking confused and lost.

“Her fiancé, have you forgotten? His name was Shyam and look at how he turned out to be and look at my husband, he loves me to death’s end, two people can have the same name and be so completely different, my husband loves me to bits whilst the guy she was going to marry turned out to be a cheat, she never did say why, the funny thing was, the day she came to tell me, she wanted to tell me something, she looked so upset but my manglesutre fell and I panicked thinking something had happened to my Shyam, but she saved it from dropping, I thought my world was over for a second, I know I can get a bit melodramatic, but she was always there, remember even with the thaal...Arnav? Chote!?”

Arnav’s world had just turned upside down, he kept repeating the words in his head “she broke the engagement....his name was Shyam....she wanted to tell me something...she saved my manglesutre”, he got up; his body was shaking, could he have made such a terrible mistake? Could he really have got the wrong end of the stick?

“Chote! Where are you going?” shouted Anjali “are you alright? Is it your sugar levels? Have they dropped? Chote! Answer me!”

“Di, I’m fine I need to go and talk to Khushi, I’ll be back” he said dazed, Oh God, had he really messed things up? He had never made the link, his mind went back.

Chapter 3

*flashback*

he had been talking on the phone when she had whacked into him, she bent down to pick up the broken glass, he could see she was broken but what was wrong with her? “khushi are you alright? Khushi? What happened?” he helped her up, Khushi, he felt so helpless, he had no idea what was wrong and her body was shaking as she wept, “what did your fiance do? Did he hurt you?” Arnav bellowed out. In reply Khushi had said “my fiancé he tried to...”

“What did he try to do? Khushi tell me, did he try and hurt you?....”

*end of flashback*

But she had just stared at him and run out and when she had run downstairs HE had been there and when Anjali had asked her husband to drop Khushi off, Khushi had screamed no and run off, did that mean she was innocent? He remembered how at the party she had said that only she knew how much her ex fiancé had hurt her and her family. There were thousand little signs, he remembered when he had brought her back from the guesthouse Payal had been talking to a guy called Shyam, God where had all these memories gone? Had he been so unable to think that he had forgotten everything? Her nervousness and unhappiness at the marriage, the way her eyes had pleaded him to help her, he had managed to forget everything. He stumbled into the room to see her sitting near the window staring out at the stars, how many times had he seen her sitting there?

*flashback*

It had been two days since they were married, he knew she was scared of the dark, but he refused to let her know that he was worried, he left a lamp where she could see it and use it as she saw fit, he let her sleep on the bed, but he was tormented day and night. Knowing she was in his bed. He began putting up the stars above the bed, remembering how she had them above the bed in her room at the house. Once he had set them up, he had his face set and was waiting for her to come into the room. She came in with her head down, looking defeated and as if she had to fight the world, he had the urge to go to her, but he remembered how much pain she had caused him, she had betrayed him, there was no way he would comfort her, she deserved every pain she received, he was getting angry again and his mind clouded over again, she would have to tolerate the one he would give now. Khushi looked up at him and then the bed, she saw the stars, her eyes welled with gratitude, that no matter what, at least he had done this one thing for her, it meant the world that he had thought to bring her parents close to her.

“Do you like them Khushi? I remember how you had them above your bed and how you said they reminded you that your parents were always close to you” he said softly.

“Arnav ji...thank....” she began

“Oh don’t thank me yet Khushi” he wrenched the stars from above the bed so that the glass stars shattered to the floor.

Her eyes shot up to meet his, they filled with tears and shock, her heart felt like it had shattered it into thousands of little pieces like the stars made out of glass, he had effectively just taken her parents away from her. The tears fell silently, as she looked up at him with a mixture of grief and anger.

“how did that feel Khushi? Did it feel like the world had just been pulled out from under your feet?”

He moved quickly so that she could not evade him and grabbed her by the arms? “Did you really think that I would leave stars up for you? Welcome to hell Khushi Kumari Gupta, you will be punished for everything you have done to me, did you actually think you could ever win me? How dare you think that you could get what you want staying under my roof!” he shook her hard and could literally hear her teeth rattle.

“let me go!” she tore free of him, ramming into the table behind her, the pain shot up her hip and her arm, but gritting her teeth she backed off from him, she could feel the trickle of sweat on her back, her body was shaking but she gripped her saree hard as she backed against the wall. “keep away from me, I have no idea why you married me, I’ve done what you wanted to save my sister’s marriage, I have no idea why you made me do what you did, so why do you have to keep taking these digs at me?” She wept.

He moved closer “do you really not know why?”

“NO! And you know what I don’t care anymore” she cried “just stay away from me, I just want you to stay far away from me” she whispered, broken.

*end of flashback*

He stood still, waiting for his heartbeat to slow, for the pounding in his ears to go down. Her grief stricken eyes were always lingering in his memories and now his heart clenched at the thought that he might have made a terrible mistake. A mistake she might never be able to forgive him for.

“Khushi, I need to talk to you” he whispered, sickened to the core.

She looked up “why what do you have to say now? Not managed to say enough this morning?” she said bitterly.

“No....I....I need to ask you something” he stammered. She continued to look at him, surprised that he was having such a difficult time talking, or was this some kind of trick? She was scared to trust her instincts, but a part of her was pulled towards him.

He could see she was refusing to walk to up to him, she sat there, her arms around her knees, looking like an angel. He felt like walking away, just starting afresh, not beginning this conversation, if he were to just make everything ok, never mention how stupid he had been, he wouldn’t have to see the pain on her face when she realised the truth, because she had never really known what was going on, but he would ask, he knew now what a big mistake he had made, he couldn’t put it away, that would make him a wimp.

“Khushi, how long has Shyam been after you?” asked Arnav. Her arms dropped, her back went rigid and her eyes wide.

“Arnav ji” she whispered

If he hadn’t known before, he knew that minute that he had been the worst kind of person on earth, he had got everything completely wrong, and her face told him she was innocent. He now no longer had a way out of this mess.

“I saw you and Shyam on the wedding day, when he was hugging you, I made a mistake Khushi, I misunderstood you, I thought you and....” before he could finish his sentence, Khushi was standing up. “What? Me and Shyam were together? You...you saw us? “her heart had frozen, everything started to fall into place, the reason he had married her in such haste, the embarrassment she had to go through, the pain she had to suffer, everything was crystal clear now. “Why do you think we’re not right now?” she asked calmly.

He could see she was aghast, he knew she was asking in anger but he had to answer. “I just worked out that if you had been with him there would have been no reason for you to break that engagement, you were never happy being engaged. Khushi I’ve been an idiot” he closed his eyes “I’m so sorry”.

He stumbled back into the table as she pushed him, the same one she had stumbled on this morning. “You Mr Arnav Singh Raizada are asking for forgiveness!!!? After you destroyed my life? You know everything, you know the answer to everything, you never need to ask, you never need to be told, you know how to do everything, you know how to fix things! Not once did you think you should ask me what happened, instead you set out to destroy my life! In front of my family you made me feel cheap, I had no answer to their questions, apart from the fact that you had married me for 6 months, anybody would have just thought it was legalised prostituition! Not once did you consider what I would do when you left me, how could you Arnav ji?” she screamed.

Suddenly she froze

*flashback 4 weeks earlier*

she woke up screaming at night, she had been dreaming of her parents in a car accident, the dream never went away, she couldn’t seem to come out of the clutches of the dream, she was struggling to surface into reality, someone was shaking her, her eyes opened, she tried to get her bearings, she blinked her eyes to clear away the sleep.

“Khushi, Khushi are you ok? What happened?” Arnav was frantically asking her. He lifted a glass of water to her mouth, she took a sip. He put the glass down, she was shaking so hard, she really wished the cold sweat would disappear, that her shaking would stop, tears were rolling down her eyes.

"Khushi, it's ok calm down, tell me what happened" demanded Arnav. Instead Khushi buried her face in his chest. Arnav tightened his grip on her, Khushi calm down, what happened? Tell me" but how could she tell him? One minute she had been dreaming of her parents and the next moment she had been in Shyam's arms unable to tear herself away from him, the more she had tried the more he had held her tightly, leaving bruise marks, the same way he had the night of the wedding. She was pale and cold, she just couldn't stop shivering, but Arnav's warmth was beginning to seep through. She held onto him tightly afraid to let go. Her right hand was pressed against his chest and the needs began to stir, he could feel the desire course through his body, his eyes held her captive, he brushed her lips gently and he wanted more, Khushi had closed her eyes, she had waited for this moment from that day, her legs had turned to water, if anyone had told her to stand up at that point she would fallen to the floor. His hands rummaged through her hair and down her back in a swift take of possession, he could have her here and now, there was no one to stop him. He moved towards her again and the phone rang.

They both jerked back staring at each other. Arnav switched the phone off and chucked it on the floor. He had come back to his senses, she had no right to ask for anything from him, how dare she play the fragile flower when she had done everything to destroy his sister's life? To destroy him? "Khushi, I know you don't mind jumping from one bed to another but I do, keep your antics for someone who will take them" so saying he walked out.

Khushi fell to the floor weeping, broken, it was only the first night of their marriage, how much more would she have to take?

*end of flashback*

She looked him in the eyes, "that day when I had the nightmare, you knew.....you knew about me and Shyam, this morning what you said....you.....you....I wish I could swear at you, you thought I was having an affair with him, HOW COULD YOU!!!!!! AFTER EVERYTHING WE HAD BEEN THROUGH, AFTER THE WAY YOU MADE ME FEEL....HOW COULD YOU ARNAV JI?" she screamed with tears running down her cheeks.

Arnav stepped forward

"don't make the mistake of touching me, I'll kill you, I don't want you hands on me, I don't want you near me, you make me feel disgusting. How many times have you used me? How many times have you misunderstood me Arnav ji? Never once did you ask, I would have given you my life, but no, you wanted to test me...no, no, not even test me, you wanted to punish me, every time you came near me, you thought I had behaved like that with him, you thought I was some sort of prostitute, that I could do that. Arnav Ji, after getting to know me, that's all you managed to learn about me." She wiped her tears furiously. "You won't believe how much I hate you right now, after everything you have already done to mess up my life, this wasn't enough, I wish I had never met you Mr Arnav Singh Raizada, because of you, because the stupid video that you released I met Shyam and my life was destroyed, I WISH I HAD NEVER MET YOU! ".

"Khushi please just listen to me once...." Arnav called out, but she had already walked out, he kept leaning against the wall, heartbroken and unable to comprehend what to do. What did she mean when she said that it was because of him she had met Shyam? He was lost, he needed the answers.

Guys will try and update later this week, let me know what you think, don't think it was all that good, but all this was swimming in my head and just did not have the heart to write a romantic track.

Sorry for mistakes made, I'm sure I have made a few! Lol! This was done on a rant and I have been through it, but my heads spinning now. But lol I feel slightly better!

Chapter 4

Where was she? Arnav thought to himself, he needed to find out what she had meant when she said that he had caused all her problems. How had she met Shyam because of him? He saw Payal coming from the other director. "Payal" he called out.

"yes jet ji, can I help you with something?" asked Payal

"have you seen Khushi?" he asked looking around.

"No, I haven't seen her all morning" she replied

"can you come into my room for a few moments, I need to ask you something important" he said.

Payal studied her brother in law, he looked very nervous and lost, something must have happened between him and Khushi. She was concerned for her sister, she looked around but could not see her as she stepped into the room.

"Jet ji is everything ok?" she asked worried

"Payal I have made a huge mistake, one that I'll probably hate myself for, for the rest of my life, but I need you to tell me how Khushi met Shyam" his voice sounded tormented, but more than that, Payal was shocked, he knew about Shyam? When did he find out? Had Khushi told him?

"Jet ji how do you know about Shyam?" Payal asked concerned, this could have serious ramifications.

"Payal, I will tell you everything" and so he told her how had seen Shyam hugging her and how he had managed to mess up the whole situation.

Payal looked up at him with tears in her eyes "she married you to save my marriage, how could you do this to us? Her family disowned her, they thought that she had wanted her way and so she had tarnished the family name, and all along her lips were sealed because of you, how could you have humiliated her like that? Oh but you could, she always did say you were a rakshas, that you never did seem to care if you hurt anyone. God she has been through so much because of you, but should I hate you or myself more? I misjudged my sister because of you, only because of you we all alienated her, I would have been better off back in my house not being married, why did she think she was doing the right thing? Just because my marriage had broken once, did she think I would want her to make such a big sacrifice?"

Her words were like stabs, "Payal, I know what I have done, and I will hate myself for it for the rest of my life, but right now I need to know what she mean when she said that it was only because of me that she met shyam".

Payal looked at him with bitter eyes "When you released that video, you created havoc in our lives, amma and babuji were so angry with that video clip, it made her look so bad, it was worse because Amma refused to speak to her, at least babuji knew that she would never do anything to dishonour the family name. Anyway, we had gone to the market to buy stuff and Khushi and me got surrounded by these men, they made all these snide remarks and they were hitting on her, basically they thought that if she was messing about with you, she could do the same with them. One of them pulled her dupatta off her and that's when shyam came into the picture" Payal told him everything, how they had to shift to Delhi, how they had to struggle, how Shyam helped her to find a job, which ended up being in his office, the engagement, how she broke it off, how she had come to tell them. Every word that Payal was a blow to him battered heart, he had gone numb, he seemed to be frozen and could hardly speak a word. His hands were fisted, they felt useless, he wanted to ram them into something, to break everything in his room, the scream all the pain away.

"So now you know jet ji. I'm angry at you, but I am so much more angry at myself, my poor sister was suffering through so much and all I could think was how she couldn't trust me, how she had embarrassed our parents, I hate myself more then I hate you" so saying she walked out.

She walked down the corridor, as soon as Khushi came, she would go to her and apologise, but for now she had to let everyone at home know exactly how stupid and unfair they had been, Khushi had saved their respect in society, she had never tried to tarnish them, it was them, who she had considered her own that had been unable to be a family to her. She lifted the phone and dialled the number.

Chapter 5

She was just about to walk out of the house when Arnav walked up to her, "Khushi please let me talk to you for two minutes I want to apologise for everything I have done, I made a huge mistake, not just now, before as well, Payal told me everything. My stupidity led to so many problems in your life, if I could rewind back time I would change it all".

"Would you really Arnav Singh Raizada? If we could turn back the clocks I would not want to see your face ever again, but that's not possible, time never goes back" she said furiously.

"please Khushi don't be like that, I know I made a huge mistake...." he began

"Arnav Ji, can you do me one favour? I have done everything you have asked, I have fulfilled all my duties to you, I never once went against what you wanted, I just have one request, and I want you to think carefully before you answer. I have never done anything to back away from any promise I have ever made, for me a promise is there to be fulfilled, I made a promise to you that day when you tied that manglesutre around my neck, when you emptied that little box of sindoor on my head, I promised to stay with you for six months and you promised you would set me free....Arnav ji, now that you know the truth, can you set me free? You see I feel suffocated in this house, when I look at the four walls of our room, it feels like I have been jailed, I need to breathe, I need to get out, but Arnav ji if you tell me to stay with you for the six months, I will keep my promise to you" she looked up at him, her eyes had no emotions in them, it scared him that she could look like that, no anger no hated, no love, he could see nothing in her eyes, whereas before he could read them.

He was scared, scared that he had messed up bad, but he couldn't make her stay with him, that would be wrong, the door bell rang, Khushi opened the door, his clients, oh damn! He had forgotten all about that stupid meeting, and now he couldn't even turn them away, he felt hopeless, he couldn't believe his luck, whenever they got around to talking something had to come in their way. But he would talk to her, he wouldn't let her leave without him trying to make amends.

"Khushi, please let me talk to you, after that if you still want to leave I won't stop you, I promise." he pleaded.

"That`s fine Arnav ji, but I won't change my mind, I need to get out for now, I need to clear my head" so saying she let the clients in and herself out.

"he wanted to shout at her to stop, was she leaving him? He couldn't make a scene in front of them, but should he just go after her? No, she needed time to think, he couldn't keep crowding her. I'll wait for her to come back, she won't leave without saying goodbye, especially seeing as it was hitting night time.

Chapter 6

Khushi walked out of the house and then began to run, she wanted to just run and run until she disappeared, she wanted to get far away from the Raizada mansion, she needed time to think, she felt like she was being overtaken by the rush of emotions, how could she continue like this? It was too much for her, she wanted peace. She stopped once she had reached the marketplace, she was breathing heavily, finding a bench she walked over to it and sat down. She hadn't realised how far she had come from the Raizada Mansion. It was night, she shouldn't have rushed out like that, she hated the night, it always seemed to be the worst part of the day when you were completely alone, the roads were empty, people had gone home after a hard day`s work and she sat there broken and alone. Nani "we have to fulfil all the traditions, Arnav you have to carry her over the threshold" everyone looked hurt and disappointed, Khushi had her head bowed down, she was defeated, Arnav was furious that he had to do all of this......

Khushi sat on the bed frightened, would they have the suhaag raat, surely he wouldn't want that, she was shaking so badly, but just say he did? "don't worry Khushi, I have no plans of touching you, what I wanted has been achieved" said Arnav sarcastically.

"SO WHY DON'T YOU TELL ME! YOU ALREADY WALKED OUT ON ME WHEN I ASKED ONCE, WHAT DID I DO! " she screamed "please just answer my question, tell me why your punishing me" she pleaded more quieter now.

"I don't have to tell you anything" and so saying got the blanket and walked out of the room.

*end of flashbacks*

Chapter 7

Why did she have to go through all of this? "Oh devi maiya how much do you think I can tolerate? I loved that man to bits, all he had to do was ask me, and I would have done anything". she whispered

But no, he had to think the worst of her, he had destroyed her, the family that had loved her, had cared for her and pushed her away. But was that their fault? Yes it was, why should she justify their actions? After everything she had done for them, in one minute they had managed to push her away at a touch of the button. Had she gotten angry at buaji when she had manipulated her to marry Shyam? No she had accepted it, had she taunted her when she had realised who shyam really was? No! But instead of trying to understand her they had all pushed her away like she was nothing.

She looked up at the stars, tears rolling down her eyes "mama, papa, is this what you brought me in the world for? You left me alone in this world and went far away, now I have to face all these problems on my own, if you had been here I could have talked to you, mama I could have laid my head in your lap and I could have told you all my problems, you wouldn't have pushed me away, right mama? You would have kissed my worries away, you would have told me everything would be alright, but you're not here mama, I'm alone, where should I go? I miss you guys so much, no one is mine, they pushed me away, mama, papa, your watching day and night, can you see how much pain I am in? can't you help me? If you had been here you would have come forward and fought for my rights, you would have said don't pick on our Khushi, we know she has the morals and values we gave her, she would never behave like that, but no, you left me, was it because you knew I would go through so much? Did you not want to see me in so much pain? You're all the way up there far away from all this pain whilst I'm suffering day after day. Mama would you have let me break to pieces? Would you have let everyone accuse me like that? but what difference does it make, when your not here? Who listened to my pleas? They all pushed me away, they all accused me, they made me feel low in my own eyes, and Arnav, I set my life out for him, I imagined all those moments that make life beautiful, when he spent all those loving moments with me, I thought my life was going down the road of happiness, where everything was bright and vivid, I had imagined myself spending every day of my life with him, but no I had not imagined myself lonely, without anybody, without an identity. Mama and papa, what should I do?"

The phone rang over and over, she ignored it, she needed time to think, she would go back and she would listen to what he had to say, but she needed this time to think, but the phone would not stop ringing. "Arnav, please leave me alone" so saying she chucked the phone onto the floor, it fell a few metres away.

Chapter 7

God she was beautiful, he could never seem to get her out of his mind. Her thoughts clouded his days and made it unbearable to go on. Her smile lighted up his world, she was something out of this world and she was his. No one would ever again come between them, he would always be there to help her, not like last time, not when everyone had shunned her and he had been unable to do anything due to his own weakness. No, now she was his, he would protect her, he would love her and he wouldn't ever let that pathetic sick man touch her. It felt like he had waited for this moment forever, his heart was racing, she would finally be his and no one would ever come between them, life would be wonderful, he thought of all the places they would go, he would take her somewhere special for their honeymoon, maybe France or maybe Istanbul, oh who cared as long as she was with him. He knew he had done a lot of things to hurt her, but he promised himself he would make it up to her, he would make sure that she was never sad again, she never had to look for help from anyone, she was his Khushi, he wouldn't let anything happen to her, he wouldn't let anyone come between them ever again. After all she was his now and forever.

He walked up to her with a big smile "Khushi!" he called out.

Khushi looked up, eyes shocked" What are you doing here?"

Chapter 8

Arnav paced the room, he had lost. He had lost everything that was precious to him, he had been so unbelievably stupid. He had thought he had it all planned out, that he knew what was right and wrong. Oh God why could I not have spoken to her once? Why did he have to think that he knew everything? His heart had gone with her, how would he function without her? He had never thought he could be wrong about anything, oh no not Arnav Singh Raizada. He plowed his fist through the mirror, and saw himself in the thousands of broken pieces. He didn't feel the trickle of blood, every moment felt like agony to him, his heart was screaming for Khushi, but what face would he show her? After all he had done to her, how could he possibly ever even consider the possibility of her forgiving him? NO! He wouldn't let it end there, he would try and talk to her, she would have to listen to him, she shouldn't be out this late anyway, she was afraid of the dark, why would she walk out so late at night? He would phone her and find out where she was after that he would clear up all this mess. He would fall down on his knees and he would beg for her forgiveness, she would forgive him, he would make sure that he erased every single pain he had ever caused her.

He picked up his phone and dialled her number. It rang and rang and went to message. He tried again and again until she finally picked up "Khushi please listen to me...." he began

"Arnav I have nothing to say to you leave me alone" she whispered.

"KHUSHI!!! KHUSHI!!! Listen to me!" he called out through the phone, but he couldn't hear an answer, all he could hear was the sobbing and her talking, "Khushi please listen to me" Arnav begged, a chill went down his spine, he couldn't bear it, no! He had to get to her right now. He grabbed his keys and ran for the door.

arshi crossroads continued (By Rashdah) (Thanked: 24 times)

Hi guys sorry, I know I'm late with the update, my dad was unwell so we had to take him to the hospital, nothing serious, we hope, but shall find out tom.

here is the update, however, my intention had been to complete it this weekend, it will now cross fingers be completed during the week. please tolerate the delay.

Chapter 9

Khushi sat frozen on the bench, Hey devi maiya, why are you testing me? Don’t I have enough on my plate?

“Khushi...khushi ji are alright? I know everyone has been so awful to you, and I know I wasn’t able to do anything about it, but you have to know, it pained me so much I felt like KILLING THEM ALL” Shyam said furiously “Arnav had no right to do what he did to you....”

Khushi sat, muted, unable to utter a word, this guy had managed to make her life a rollercoaster and he still felt that he could win her over.

“I’m going to teach him a.....” continued Shyam

“Shut up! His my husband and I refuse to listen to a single word against him, you have no right to get involved in our relationship. How many times do I have to tell you that I can’t even think of the idea of having any sort of connection with you? Why is it that you seem to think that by you being so considerate and kind to me, I’ll jump and say yes! I’ll go with you wherever you want me to, Shyam, I’m not interested in you, I’m a married woman, and for me Arnav is everything, he is my love and he is my life” She yelled at him. “What the hell is your problem? It’s like there is a blank bit in your brain that just refuses to accept that even if you were to leave Anjali ji I would not be yours. What you did to me, what you did to my family was bad enough, but the way you manipulated me and Arnav ji was worst then everything else. You stripped me of my identity, you made me to look like some kind of cheat and now you think you can come back here and give me your sob stories and I will fall for them? You are not man enough to accept you were wrong, you’re not man enough to become a father and you really think that I would want you in my life? You make me sick”.

“Khushi ji, you have to listen to me” said Shyam gently, sending chills down her spine, he had not heard a word she had said “for me you are the world, the moment I saw you there was no one else for me, the world pales in comparison to you, at night I can’t sleep next to rani saiba, I feel like running away when I am in that bed with her, I suffocate, all I can think of is you, having you next to me touching your hair.....”

“you sick pervert!” Khushi screamed, “GET AWAY FROM ME!!” so saying Khushi pushed hard and began to run, but before that two guys were in her way, they grabbed her and held her in place “LET ME GO! Shyam tell them to let me go, what are you doing?”

“Khushi, you don’t seem to want to listen to me, this is the only way now, for some reason being between all these people you don’t seem to understand how much I love you, its ridiculous for me to keep trying to explain it all to you, we need to be alone and I’m so sorry this is the only way that I can get you to see how much I love you” He said looking forlorn.

“Oh my God, your mad, why don’t you understand that I love Ar....” before she could finish the sentence Shyam grabbed her by the face, “don’t you dare say his name, I am sick and tired of you continuously going on about how I should be faithful to my wife, why should I be faithful to her when I don’t even love her? Now you’re going to start going on about sale saab? Uh-uh no way, I will not tolerate you saying that you like him, he has forced you to think you have feelings for him, I’ll sort it all out” so saying he let go of her face “take her away, you know where to leave her, make sure no one sees you, I’ll be there in a few minutes, I need to go let rani saiba know I have to go away on an important case”.

Khushi began to scream loudly, but the road was empty, there was a lady walking with her child, but fear for her child made her pick up the child and run, Khushi began to weep “please let me go” but they didn’t listen to her, they put tape around her mouth and forced her into a black sedan car, they strapped her wrists together, and as she wiggled one of them smirked “too bad we need the money otherwise she would have been good enough for us” Khushi’s eyes widened and she stopped moving, fear had left her glued to the spot, she didn’t dare to move. What would she do now? Who could she call for help? They would take her away and no one would no. NO! Arnav ji would find her, he knew that she had gone only for a little while, but suppose he thought that she had left him? Say he didn’t come for her then what would she do? The fear was overpowering her senses, she no longer knew what to do, she had no idea where they were taking her or what would happen to her. She wished from the bottom of her heart she had never gone to that stupid fashion show.

Chapter 10

Shyam began to walk off smiling, oh everything was perfect, he had Khushi now and all he needed to do was convince her that he was the one for her. Overtime, without all this added headache she would know that they were meant to be together. As he walked away he caught a glimpse of something near the trees, he went over, it was Khushi’s phone “ah well that’s brilliant, at least now she can’t try and contact anyone, haha could anything be more per...” he stopped talking to himself, the phone was on, he put it to his ear “Sale saab i’m guessing you heard the whole thing, hai what a shame, here I was thinking I would come home spend some time with your wonderful sister before I went away on a long trip and enjoy myself with Khushi, but sometimes life does not got the way you plan it, am I right sale saab?”.

“You bloody bastard! What have you done with her? If you do anything to my Khu....” Arnav began

“Oh Sale saab” said shyam through gritted teeth “I would not bother saying she is yours anymore, I have her, she is all mine, she was never meant to be yours, the first time I saw her, I wanted her, now she will be mine and you won’t ever be able to hurt her” so saying he cut the call.

“If you so much...” before Arnav could complete the sentence, he realised Shyam had cut off the call. He fisted his hands on the wheel, tears of frustration were brimming in his eyes, where would he find her? His Khushi, the one he had loved so much, he hadn’t been able to trust her and now he was unable to protect her.

arshi cross roads (By Rashdah) (Thanked: 23 times)

Why? Why the hell had he thought that he had all the answers? He had been scared of asking her anything, he would never have been able to tolerate her telling him that she was in love with his brother in law, so rather than ask he had punished her. Her pain had ripped his heart apart, but he had continued, steady and fast to break her resolve, to shatter her dignity and for what? His vision wavered as he remembered.

*flashback*

"you have no place in this room, whilst you're in this house we will pretend to be a happily married couple, and inside this room we are nothing to each other" saying this his slammed the glass door shut so that both the physical and emotional barrier was up once again, he turned his back towards her, he didn't want to see her questioning look, he didn't want to feel guilty, why should he when she was the one to blame? He stalked into the bathroom to change his clothes, as he changed, he thought of her bridal dress, God she had looked gorgeous, his heart had melted on seeing her, but when she got up, he'd known she was thinking about Shyam. How dare she play with his heart, him, Arnav Singh Raizada, who had never let anyone near him, she had melted the ice around his heart, she had made it beat once again, beat for her, just to break it to pieces. He shut his eyes to block the pain and headed for the bed.

She sat there heartbroken and confused, why was he behaving like this? Why did he once again have so much hatred for her? What had she done to him to have him hate her so much? God it was so cold, how would she spend the night in this bitter cold? She sat shivering as the cold slid against her bare skin, tears streamed her cheeks, the teardrops making her feel even colder, how could he be so cruel? What had she done to deserve this punishment? She wanted to get up and demand answers, but she was so cold and she was so tired, tears still making their way out she fell asleep with her knees against her chest and her arms around her legs to get some warmth into her body.

He got up to put the blanket of himself and remembered the time Khushi had fallen ill due to his negligence at the Dhabba, feeling guilty he got up to quickly check on her, his heart wrenching when he saw her shuddering form, he ran to get her inside, and stopped at the doors, NO! Why should he help her? Why did she deserve his help after she had betrayed him? He turned his back on her again, no he wouldn't help her, she had destroyed his and his sister's life, she deserved every ounce of pain she got, but why was he feeling this unbearable pain? He clenched his fists, he gritted his jaws against the physical pain that he was going through on seeing her suffer, no he couldn't leave her like that, he went towards her, YES! He could, why should he help her? he wouldn't, he refused to feel this sympathy, but how could he leave her like that? He looked at her, she was shivering badly, he felt the pain rack through his body, no I can't leave her like that, OH GOD! What should I do? I can't take this anymore ugh! I won't help her his brain screamed and he began to pull the wedding decorations down, letting lose his anger, he destroyed the flower decorations, he felt like breaking everything, tearing the world apart. He stopped. Looking back at her he picked up the blanket in anger, opening the doors he chucked it at her.

Khushi opened her eyes at the sound of the door, her eyes dazed, she looked at the blanket confused and then looked back at him, he closed the door and sat on that awful green chair, he looked up at her again, he watched her chuck the blanket off herself and look at him defiantly, her eyes screamed I don't need your pity, not after all that abuse you hurled at me. He couldn't bear to meet her eyes so looked away. He looked towards her again and her eyes continued to question him, why was she looking at him like that? Like she had no idea what was going on? How well she acted, she could make him feel guilty simply by just looking at him, but he refused to let her affect him, so he closed his eyes and shut everything out.

*End of flashback*

BANG! He had hit a tree and his head hit the wheel, he slowly came up dazed and lifted his hand to the forehead, his hand came away with blood on it, but he couldn't care less, the car had stopped on impact but still he didn't notice anything, he was torn between the bitter memories and the bitter truth. What would he do? Where was she? What had he done? He hadn't been able to trust her, he hadn't been able to protect her and now he might have lost her. He got out of the car, panic coursing through his body, where would he find her? Where had that creep taken her? He could feel himself shaking, he lowered himself down on the pavement and sat with his head bent for a long time, tears felt useless now and they refused to come, grief stricken, he sat lost and alone.

Chapter 11

Khushi awoke with a terrible headache, she squinted her eyes against the dark, I'm alive but where am I? It was dark and she could feel her breath hitch, she felt claustrophobic. "HELP! SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!" It was so dark, she couldn't see anything and she didn't know what time it was, was it night or was it morning? How long had she been stuck in here? God it was so dark, hey devi maiya, please help me, I can't stand the dark, she started taking deep breaths, but it just made things worse, she tried to wiggle but found her hands tied, she groaned with pain as the ropes were biting into her wrist as she tried to get herself free. Why had he brought her here? What did he want to achieve? She felt the tears burn hot against her cheek, it was so dark and she was so scared. She heard the footsteps and braced herself, she knew he was coming but no longer had any idea what he was capable of, she had known that he was obsessed with her, but this had gone too far, no one knew where she was and she had no idea how to get out.

"hey Khushi ji, I brought you food" drawled out Shyam, I got you rice and dhal, but I got your favourite as well, jalebies and chaat. I made the jalebies especially for you, just the way you taught me" he smiled at her and put the food before her.

Fear of the dark was making her hyperventilate "Shyam ji can you please switch the lights on, I hate the dark".

"Only for a little while Khushi, I don't really want anyone to know that you're here, not just yet" he said switching the lights on.

She looked at the jalebies, she didn't think she could ever look at them again, they made her sick. The room looked familiar, but she couldn't place her finger on it, she was trying to work out if she had been here before but nothing clicked. There was a bed to one side and he had set out some clothes for her, she felt disgusted and queasy.

"Khushi, I know this is not the place for you, it's all just temporary, I have such wonderful plans for us!" he said clapping his hands "we will be together forever, think of all the moments we will spend together!" he said eyes gleaming.

Khushi looked at him stunned, he didn't have any idea what he had done, nor did he seem to care, how should she deal with this guy? "Shyam ji you have to realise what you have done is wrong? We can't be together, your wife..."

"Shut the hell up you stupid woman, don't you dare bring my wife into the conversation, can you not see the love I have for you? I have killed for you and yet you still think that I want her?" he said towering over her, fuming at her repetition of the same things.

She jerked backwards, recoiling at his declaration of love. Seeing the movement Shyam became enraged, he fisted his hands, he felt like hurting her until she understood just how much he loved her, but he controlled himself, he couldn't , but she would learn to love him no matter what.

continuing on (By Rashdah) (Thanked: 24 times)

Chapter 12

Arnav managed to drag himself back home, heartbroken and tense he walked in to find Payal waiting for him along with the rest of the family.

“Have you told them anything?” he asked

“How could I tell them the truth when I have no idea what is going on? Where is Khushi?” when he didn’t say anything Payal became frantic, “WHERE IS MY SISTER!!!?” she Shouted, everyone hearing her rushed forward.

“His taken her” he said looking into Payal’s eyes “his taken her and its all my fault”

Anjali seeing her brothers pain rushed forward, “Chote” she shook him “Chote whats wrong? Your really scaring me, where is Khushi?”

He looked at his sister’s sweet innocent face, how should he break it to her? His world had already turned upside down, now he would have to tell her the truth and face the consequences as well.

“di, you are going to have to be strong, I tried my best to fix everything but I managed to destroy everything instead” he whispered, anguished.

“CHOTE TELL ME WHATS WRONG! You talking like that is starting to get me more worried” she shouted at him.

“I’m so sorry di” so saying Arnav told her the whole truth, Anjali stood dazed by what she heard, her head began to spin and she fainted.

“Di, di” Arnav shouted frantically “someone call the doctor right now” he picked up his sister and took her to the room.

The doctor came and said she was ok, but that due to tension she was becoming weak and that was not good for her or the baby. An hour after the doctor had left Anjali began to regain conscious. Looking at everyone she closed her eyes again. She didn’t want to see any of them, she needed time to think, she opened her eyes and looked at everyone “please leave me alone for a while”.

“But di....” began Arnav

“Please Chote, I need time to think, and you have enough on your plate, let me get my head straight then I’ll talk to everybody”. She said eyes overflowing with tears.

Everyone left the room, Arnav looked back as he left, he knew his sister was in pain, but he had no idea how to ease it, he felt helpless, unable to help his di and unable to help Khushi. He had no idea where she was, how she was being treated. He had called the police, begged them to search for her, he had no idea what he should now do, and he felt powerless.

Anjali lay in bed, looking up at the ceiling. She wanted to shout and scream and say that it was all a lie but how much longer could she keep the dust in her eyes? She had managed to ignore all the signs, she had wanted to pretend everything was perfect.

She thought back to all the times he had taken care of her, he had wanted to protect her. She had worshipped him as if he were her world, but he had been nothing.

*flashback*

He lifted her up into his arms “aww I don’t want my rani saiba to be upset with me, she is my life, I love her to bits, say you forgive me”.

“Please put me down everyone is watching” she giggled.

“Oh but rani saiba, you have to promise to forgive me” he said with a cheeky grin.

“I forgive you” she said shyly and shyam set her down.”

*end of flashback*

She remembered thousands of other moments, her praying for his long life, worrying over where he was, hoping nothing had happened to him. She also remembered how he had been lost in thoughts, when he had come back after some time, when he had stayed at a friend’s house. But it wasn’t a friend’s house he had stayed at, it had been Khushi’s. She wanted to hate Khushi, but she couldn’t, as she remembered the countless times she had saved her diyas from burning out. She had during karva chaut brought her thali back, that young girl, barely 18 had done everything possible to save her marriage, she had hidden the truth from her because she had know she would not be able to accept the truth, and now Anjali felt a loathing for herself for being so weak, for having to rely on her brother all the time. She felt disgusted that Khushi had found it hard to tell her the truth simply because she thought she would be unable to handle the truth. Anjali’s tears fell uselessly down her cheeks, she had ignored all the signs, simply because she had not wanted to accept the reality.

Chapter 13

Arnav came to check on his sister, she was fast asleep. Having looked at her, he went back to his room. He had phoned the police a hundred times in the past few hours but they had no reply, what would he do without his Khushi?

This crazy heart had never once stopped to think that she could be innocent.

*flashbacks*

“amma, amma please listen to me” but Khushi’s mum in anger refused to listen to her and put the phone down. Khushi heartbroken, looked down at the phone. .....Khushi sat shivering in the cold, she looked at him, but he looked away....Khushi smiling at him after changing the tires...he moved in quickly and planted a kiss on her cheek....she kissed nani, di and oops she had kissed him....she stood staring at him shyly, he could see her heart was beating fast, she was breathing heavily”

*end of flashbacks*

He whacked his fist into the wall, he could smell her in his room but she wasn’t there, he hadn’t even had the chance to say sorry. Why, why could he have not just asked her? she was his heartbeat, but he couldn’t understand her. He had wanted to protect her, but he had been the one to hurt her. Was this what love was? You pushed the person you loved away from you? Why could he not have worked things out before this happened?

He phoned the police again.

“Look Mr Arnav Singh Raizada we are trying our best to find her, there is only so much we can do and you pestering us is not going to help us much, so can you please stop phoning every 5 minutes” said the chief super intendent.

Arnav threw the phone down in anger.

Payal paced in her room, she thought back to all the times she had spent with her sister, how could she have been so selfish? Not once had she thought of Khushi while her sister had whiled away her time ensuring that she was able to marry Akash.

*flashback*

“Khushi if you want me to forgive you, tell me what’s wrong” said Payal lovingly, she could tell Khushi wanted to tell her, maybe now she would, and she could help her sister. But Khushi kept silent so she became angry and moved away from her.

“I knew you would be like this, you always mess things up, you did this with my first marriage as well, when you ran off with the papers” angry she stirred the curry in the pot.

“but gi...ouch!” said Khushi

“Oh stop it, don’t think your antics will work with me, you can’t do something like this and then think that a simple apology will make things better”.

*end of flashback*

She must have been so hurt that day, but she hadn’t uttered a word. None of them had even tried to make the link, yet if they had thought about it, it would have been so obvious.

“Payal, I did say to you that there are always two sides to one coin, you should have listened to me, there is no use going over it now” said Akash gently.

“Oh Akash gi, I have been so stupid, if only I had listened to you that day, but all I could think of was how she had embarrassed us and the family” said Payal.

“Yes, but you were her sister, you were the one that knew her inside out. Then again I am your husband, did it not occur to you to tell me about Shyam? I mean, I cannot believe that jija could be so cheap. We always thought he loved Anjali so much, and to have it smacked into our faces that he was a cheat, it hurt us really badly.” He said, a bit tensely.

“Akash ji I am so sorry, I wanted to tell you, I even said to Khushi to let me, but she was thinking of Anjali ji and I think to a certain extent she didn’t want to be the reason behind my marriage breaking once again” so saying she began to weep “just to save my marriage she put herself through hell”.

“No, I think bhai does genuinely love her, whatever happened, we really need to find her, and then the two of them can sort things out between themselves”. Akash replied. He went up to Payal and took her in his arms “stop crying, everything will be ok”.

Chapter 14

Khushi sat huddled against the wall, God knew how many days had passed, and he refused to see reason. She had no idea what to do. She was so unbearably tired, she had shouted and screamed at her devi maiya to no avail and she was limp, it was like life had taken the energy away from her. He came to see her everyday, and went away somewhere for the rest of the day only to come back and sleep on a small sofa that he had purchased, but he refused to let her out of the place. He would stare at her for ages so that she felt dirty and horrible, but she would sit there refusing to so much as move an inch, just in case he tried to come near her. She could all but feel him leering at her.

She looked around, she really wished she had some idea of where she was, but she didn’t and she didn’t know what to do. She heard him coming and braced herself.

He opened the door and then locked it once he had entered. “Khushi, I have a treat for you today, we are going to go out. You know people are starting to get suspicious, as they know there is someone here, I told them it’s my wife, but look at that, they refused to believe me, so I thought if I take you out with me, then people will stop snooping around” he said beaming at her.

Khushi spat on the floor “Hell if I will be seen with you as your wife!”

Shyam gripped her arm “Do as I say, otherwise I’ll harm your family as well as your dear hubby”.

Khushi’s eyes widened, “you wouldn’t dare, like Arnav would let you touch him!”

Shyam glared down at her “he wouldn’t know what hit him, I already taught your dad a lesson, he thought that he could let my wife know what I was, and look where he ended up, in the hospital”.

“You bastard, my dad didn’t have a stroke, you done that to him, I HATE YOU!” stunned she yelled at him.

“And? Do you really think I care? If you know whats good for you, you’ll be good when we go out to the marketplace. There is a small area where we can grab something to eat, I don’t want you to even whisper a word, if you do, you won’t know what hit your family” he warned her.

Khushi sat muted, well at least she would be getting out of this place and she would have some idea of where she was.

Shyam looked over at her, she was so pretty, he had so wanted her to love him back the way he loved her, but she just refused to see reason. 7 days had passed, he had got her flowers, jalebies, clothes and jewellery, but it had no effect on her, and she just didn’t care. When he looked at her he thought of a delicate flower, one that he could keep forever. He wanted to possess her, make her his. Well he had found a way to have her; she would be his by tonight, no matter what.

“Hurry up and get ready we have to go out” he said. She looked up at him with bitter resentment, how had things gotten so bad? She got up and dressed, feeling sick to the core, in the saree he had brought for her, the saree looked overdone, one for a newly wed bride, she felt uncomfortable in it, but she had no choice but to wear it.

Chapter 12

Arnav managed to drag himself back home, heartbroken and tense he walked in to find Payal waiting for him along with the rest of the family.

"Have you told them anything?" he asked

"How could I tell them the truth when I have no idea what is going on? Where is Khushi?" when he didn't say anything Payal became frantic, "WHERE IS MY SISTER!!!?" she Shouted, everyone hearing her rushed forward.

"His taken her" he said looking into Payal's eyes "his taken her and its all my fault"

Anjali seeing her brothers pain rushed forward, "Chote" she shook him "Chote whats wrong? Your really scaring me, where is Khushi?"

He looked at his sister's sweet innocent face, how should he break it to her? His world had already turned upside down, now he would have to tell her the truth and face the consequences as well.

"di, you are going to have to be strong, I tried my best to fix everything but I managed to destroy everything instead" he whispered, anguished.

"CHOTE TELL ME WHATS WRONG! You talking like that is starting to get me more worried" she shouted at him.

"I'm so sorry di" so saying Arnav told her the whole truth, Anjali stood dazed by what she heard, her head began to spin and she fainted.

"Di, di" Arnav shouted frantically "someone call the doctor right now" he picked up his sister and took her to the room.

The doctor came and said she was ok, but that due to tension she was becoming weak and that was not good for her or the baby. An hour after the doctor had left Anjali began to regain conscious. Looking at everyone she closed her eyes again. She didn't want to see any of them, she needed time to think, she opened her eyes and looked at everyone "please leave me alone for a while".

"But di...." began Arnav

"Please Chote, I need time to think, and you have enough on your plate, let me get my head straight then I'll talk to everybody".

*flashback*

He lifted her up into his arms "aww I don't want my rani saiba to be upset with me, she is my life, I love her to bits, say you forgive me".

"Please put me down everyone is watching" she giggled.

"Oh but rani saiba, you have to promise to forgive me" he said with a cheeky grin.

"I forgive you" she said shyly and shyam set her down."

*end of flashback*

She remembered thousands of other moments, her praying for his long life, worrying over where he was, hoping nothing had happened to him. She also remembered how he had been lost in thoughts, when he had come back after some time, when he had stayed at a friend's house. But it wasn't a friend's house he had stayed at, it had been Khushi's. She wanted to hate Khushi, but she couldn't, as she remembered the countless times she had saved her diyas from burning out. Anjali's tears fell uselessly down her cheeks, she had ignored all the signs, simply because she had not wanted to accept the reality.

"amma, amma please listen to me" but Khushi's mum in anger refused to listen to her and put the phone down. Khushi heartbroken, looked down at the phone. .....Khushi sat shivering in the cold, she looked at him, but he looked away....Khushi smiling at him after changing the tires...he moved in quickly and planted a kiss on her cheek....she kissed nani, di and oops she had kissed him....she stood staring at him shyly, he could see her heart was beating fast, she was breathing heavily"

*end of flashbacks*

He whacked his fist into the wall, he could smell her in his room but she wasn't there, he hadn't even had the chance to say sorry. Why, why could he have not just asked her? she was his heartbeat, but he couldn't understand her. He had wanted to protect her, but he had been the one to hurt her. Was this what love was? You pushed the person you loved away from you? Why could he not have worked things out before this happened?

He phoned the police again.

"Look Mr Arnav Singh Raizada we are trying our best to find her, there is only so much we can do and you pestering us is not going to help us much, so can you please stop phoning every 5 minutes" said the chief super intendent.

Arnav threw the phone down in anger.

Payal paced in her room, she thought back to all the times she had spent with her sister, how could she have been so selfish? Not once had she thought of Khushi while her sister had whiled away her time ensuring that she was able to marry Akash.

*flashback*

"Khushi if you want me to forgive you, tell me what's wrong" said Payal lovingly, she could tell Khushi wanted to tell her, maybe now she would, and she could help her sister. But Khushi kept silent so she became angry and moved away from her.

"I knew you would be like this, you always mess things up, you did this with my first marriage as well, when you ran off with the papers" angry she stirred the curry in the pot.

"but gi...ouch!" said Khushi

"Oh stop it, don't think your antics will work with me, you can't do something like this and then think that a simple apology will make things better".

*end of flashback*

She must have been so hurt that day, but she hadn't uttered a word. None of them had even tried to make the link, yet if they had thought about it, it would have been so obvious.

"Payal, I did say to you that there are always two sides to one coin, you should have listened to me, there is no use going over it now" said Akash gently.

"Oh Akash gi, I have been so stupid, if only I had listened to you that day, but all I could think of was how she had embarrassed us and the family" said Payal.

"Yes, but you were her sister, you were the one that knew her inside out. Then again I am your husband, did it not occur to you to tell me about Shyam? I mean, I cannot believe that jija could be so cheap. We always thought he loved Anjali so much, and to have it smacked into our faces that he was a cheat, it hurt us really badly." He said, a bit tensely.

"Akash ji I am so sorry, I wanted to tell you, I even said to Khushi to let me, but she was thinking of Anjali ji and I think to a certain extent she didn't want to be the reason behind my marriage breaking once again" so saying she began to weep "just to save my marriage she put herself through hell".

"No, I think bhai does genuinely love her, whatever happened, we really need to find her, and then the two of them can sort things out between themselves". Akash replied. He went up to Payal and took her in his arms "stop crying, everything will be ok".

On the other end Arnav, looking drawn and weaker than before, went to his cupboard to get something to wear. He rummaged his way through his clothes, he placed his hand on the white shirt, he gripped it tightly, he had not had it washed, he brought it close to his nose and inhaled, he could smell her.

*flashback*

He walked into the room and saw her sitting on the bed with his shirt on. Desire whipped through him. He stood gaping at her and images flashing through his head. God she looked so sexy and hot, he could all but strip that shirt off her right now, he fisted his hand, he could feel the control slipping through his hands as his mind clouded over with the need to have her this minute.

Khushi looked up, the needle in her hand, she had been trying to fix the damn top that she had managed to rip, in the process she had managed to rip the rakshas’s shirt, which she would also have to fix, and here he was, in the room. She gulped down air as she saw the look in his eyes. She could feel the heat course through her body. God why did he look at her like that? Like he could devour her inch by inch? He professed to hate her, yes his eyes made love to her. She could feel him undressing her with his eyes, she looked down, shyly.

He took a deep breath “what the hell do you think you are doing with my shirt!?” he tried to sound angry, but his mouth was dry.

“Ar....Ar..Arnav ji my choli ripped, s...sss..so I borrowed your shirt” she stammered.

“just get out of my shirt right now” he bellowed.

“If I were to do that, I would have nothing on, and I’m sure you don’t want to see me like that” she said sarcastically, but for Arnav’s already overworked brain that was too much too think about, her without his shirt on had his mouth watering.

*end of flashback*

He continued to press his nose against the shirt, he so wanted her back, he wanted to lie her down on the bed, to love her to caress her to show her what she meant to him, but now he had no idea what to do, where to find her. Disheartened, he let the shirt slip through his fingers; he went to the TV and switched it on.

They were showing tourist attractions; oh how he would love to take her somewhere, where there would be no one, just them. Where he could spend every minute romancing her, loving her. As he turned away he heard something on the TV, interested he glanced back and was surprised to see the dhabba, where both himself and Khushi had stayed for the Nainathal trip. Memories came seeping back to him, the way she had eat the food, like she had not eat in days, the way she had stopped him from....wait who was that? Looking closer his eyes widened, dropping the remote he ran for the phone.

He picked up his mobile “Aman......”

Chapter 15

Shyam, gripped her arm as he pushed her along through the crowd, did they really have to set up the tourist attraction video casting today? Jeez he didn’t understand why people had to make his life difficult.

Khushi looked around, the place looked familiar, but she could not work out where she was, she was too scared to say anything just in case he tried to fulfil his promise of hurting her family.

“Khushi, I have already warned you, I don’t want to hear a word out of you today” he whispered in her ear and forced her into the small dhabba...the dhabba she realised, that’s where she was, this is where she had come with Arnav, she frantically began to look around, swallowing hard, maybe someone would see her and recognise her. But if they recognised her he would take her away again. She had no idea what to do anymore, she sat with emotions going back and fourth.

“how can I help you guys today what would you like to eat, oh madam....” began the sardarji but on seeing Khushi frantically shaking her head and then stopping when the man looked back at her, he became quiet “you look the type to have rice, dhal maybe some chaat?” he said with forced cheerfulness.

“yes bring all of that, sardarji, this is my wife” said Shyam smiling.

“yes sir, welcome madam to our small dhabba, its really nice to meet you here, please be comfortable, I’ll get you everything you need” he said swallowing hard.

Sardarji was very concerned, his wife came up to him “is that....”

“shhh, yes it is but there is something very wrong here, she was here last time with her husband, she has bruises on her arms, and this guy is saying he is her husband, I think she is in danger, hai rab, I hope he has not done anything to her, we have to try and get in contact with her husband” whispered her husband.

Just then the phone rang, when Sardarji answered the phone, he breathed a sign of relief. “Yes, I was trying to work out how I would get in contact with you, his sitting here in the dhabba with your wife, he has been telling everybody that he has been newly married, your wife looks really pale, unhappy and frightened. Yes, I’ll try my best to keep them here as long as I can, but please try to hurry, I feel something is really wrong today, the guy looks a bit manical” he put the phone down, and prepared to act.

Walking back up to them, he gave them food, looking directly at Khushi he said “you and your husband should stay here for a while, we will be having songs and dances in a little while, I think you will really enjoy yourself”.

“No” said Shyam “I have something special planned for my wife today, we won’t be able to stay for long”.

“well sir, just for a little while then” replied sardarji, afraid if he pushed too much, he might make things worse.

The sun was now setting, and Shyam was squirming in his seat, everything should be ready by now, he wanted everything to be just perfect for them both. After a few minutes more, he got up “come on Khushi, we have to get going now”.

Khushi could feel a sense of dread, she didn’t know why she had this strong sense that something was terribly wrong, but she didn’t feel like leaving with him, from what the Sardarji had communicated, it seemed like he might have contacted Arnav ji, but she could not be certain, she wasn’t even sure that he had recognised her. But if she created a fuss it would create more problems, and she didn’t know what to say to stop Shyam taking her back to that place. She had already delayed him a few times, if she did it again he might get suspicious, maybe she could make a run for it? She could always create a upheaval but then just say he harmed the people here?

“Khushi” whispered Shyam in her ear, sending shivers of alarm through her “don’t even think it, get a move on” he pushed her slightly as she started walking he gripped her hand, and pulled her forward. Khushi kept looking around hoping Arnav ji had come, she had managed to grab a pen from the floor, she wasn’t sure what she would do with it, but she had hidden it in her clothes. As they neared the place he had rented he rushed forward in a hurry, pushing her into the room and locking the door.

Khushi shocked, looked at him “Shyam what are you doing? Why are you...” freezing halfway through the sentence she looked around the room, her head was spinning, she felt light headed and through her blurry eyes she saw the room, her heart began to beat fast “No! NO WHAT DID YOU GIVE ME?” She tried to run but stumbled instead “SOMEONE, SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!!!” she screamed.

Shyam put his hand over her mouth, “shh Khushi, I only gave you a little something to make you more plaint, but it looks like it hasn’t worked properly, look around sweetheart, its our suhaag raat today”.

Khushi tried to wriggle out of his grip, she looked around the room, he had brought in a four poster bed, he had spread rose petals over the bed, the whole room had been decorated and on the bed was the manglesutre and sindoor. She struggled to get away from him, but he gripped her tight.

“Khushi, I have waited for this moment for ages, there is no way I will now let you go, my love for you has no bounds and I want to make you my wife, you won’t be leaving this room today and when the night is over, when your totally mine, you will realise that there is no one that loved you more” Shyam said firmly.

He eased the grip, Khushi pushed his hand away and stumbled backwards “are you mad? I am already married, I would rather die than marry you, you hideous creature, never in my life did I think that you could drop so low, you really think that this is going to work? I won’t let you touch me!” she shouted.

“Khushi, how do you plan on getting out of this room? I’m crazy about you” he moved forward and picked up the manglesutre, Khushi grabbed it from his hand and broke it, she glared at him defiantly “I broke it, you think because you took away the one that Arnav ji gave, I will become your wife with this? If I can’t respect you as a husband, if I can’t see you as being anything but a sick, demented person, how do you expect me to be able to love you?”

“Well, do you really think that breaking that manglesutre is going to stop me tonight? I’ve decided your mine, and for me that’s it. If you don’t want the marriage label that`s your choice” he said angrily, he grabbed her by the arms, raising her to her toes “if you’re so adamant that you can’t respect me like a husband, then what is the need for me to think of you as my wife? I can still have you. These feelings that run through my veins for you, I can’t stop them, and the only way I can stop it is if I finally have you completely, maybe afterwards you will realise how much I love you, for me, having you is what matters, whether it is before or after I make love to you”. He ripped her blouse and lowered his mouth, Khushi used all her strength to push him away “You bastard, I won’t let you near me” so saying she ran across the room.

“Khushi there is no way out of this room for you, I want to apologise but I can’t, I have to have you tonight, I am done waiting” he began to move forward.

Chapter 16

Arnav had seen her, he had seen that good for nothing creep shovelling her along. His heart was pounding, if he had done anything to her he would kill him, he would shred him to pieces and not let him live. He had to get to his Khushi before it was too late, why the hell was this traffic taking so long? Was this the only day that they had found to queue up?

“ damn it! Move!” he yelled to himself, slowly the traffic started to creep forward and he accelarted the car, he had to get to her, he had told the sardarji to keep an eye out on them, but a little while ago he had got a call from him telling him that although they had maintained them for a while, Shyam had taken Khushi with him, and someone had overheard him saying that he had a surprise for her.

It took all of his self control not to just ride over all the cars, he continued to race down the road as fast as he could. It hadn’t taken this long when they had been going to Nainatal last time, so why the hell was it taking so long now? Of course last time they had to hike the way to the Dhabba and this time he had the car. “Hurry up, hurry up” he muttered to himself, his hands were visibly shaking, for some reason there was a urgency for him to get there as fast as he could, something was wrong he could feel it, his Khushi needed him, he wouldn’t let anything happen to her.

He remembered her pain when her buaji had rejected her, when she had run down the stairs, waiting to get home for her pagh phere, but she had been rejected by her family members. They way she sat outside, curled up crying for her family, damn it all because he had not been able to talk to her, would it have been too much too open his big mouth and just ask her what was wrong?

Khushi knew she had to do something, so as shyam lowered his mouth, she struck the pen she had grabbed on her way back from the dhabba, it missed the eye by an inch, Shyam howled as he grabbed his eye, the pain was intense, how could she do this to him “Khushi what the hell do you think you are doing?”

“i’ve already told you don’t try and come near....” so saying she staggered once again, realisation hit her, he had drugged her, panicking she ran for the door, it was locked. Devi maiya, what now, how would she fight him off her, crying she pulled the door handle, hoping it would break away, but it was to no avail, she could not get it to open, and she heard him rip the arm of her blouse. God how would she get away, he grabbed her from the back and dragged her to the bed “please, please Shyam ji let me go, I have never done anything to hurt you, why are you doing this to me? I beg you please let me be, how will I face society?” she pleaded. She felt his hand over her mouth and her heart raced faster and faster, what should I do? Oh please someone help me, Oh God please your watching, don’t let this happen to. She was struggling to breath, he let het mouth go for a second, she took fast short gulps and screamed “HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ARNAV JI!!!!!”

“Shut up Khushi no one will come, stop screaming, otherwise it will be that much worse” he growled “no one can see you, no one will help you, he won’t come because he doesn’t know where you are and by the time you get back to him he won’t want you, so in the end I will win and you will have to marry me”.

Nausea rolled through her, her stomach turned over as tears streamed down her cheeks, she knew it was useless when he began to rip her saree away, the fear was wild inside her, she whipped side to side trying to get away, she feels the blood in her mouth, where she had bit into her lip, she still tried to push him away, finally she gave up and lay there her mind went to all those moments where she had been happy as a child playing with her jiji, where she had always had fun and had no idea what pain was, the tears had stopped, she no longer cared, she just wanted it over and done with.

"come on, come on" he muttered to himself, he screeched the car to a halt. Sardarji was waiting for him as he rushed out of the car.

"Where is she?" he shouted at him

"Sirji, she is that house just past the river, my men will take you" so saying he sent 3 of his men with Arnav, they rushed forward, as they neared the place where he had stayed with Khushi on his trip and what he heard had the blood draining from his head.

"HELP!!!! ARNAV JI!!!!" the world tilted over for him as white hot fear burned through him and he ran to the door. He could hear her weeping, his heart clenching he began to bash the door in, until he broke it down.

Chapter 17

The door gave way and he burst in to see Shyam on top of Khushi, he mind clear of all thoughts, except the hunger to kill him he ran forward dragging Shyam off Khushi, he saw her ripped clothes, the bruises on her arms and the marks of his lips across her throat and his anger going beyond reason had him punching Shyam in the face, Shyam went flying across the room, determined, Arnav moved forward punching him again and again, Shyam threw a few punches back but against Arnav he had no chance, all fury and with a bloody lip, Arnav punched him in the stomach sending him careening into the wall, he bashed his head against the wall and finally threw him into the floor continuously pounding him, he kept on tearing into him and could distantly hear someone calling his name.

“Arnav Ji! Arnavi ji!!! Please stop, you will kill him, please!” he could hear Khushi pleading over the roar in his head but was unable to stop the wild desperate beatings across Shaym’s face “Now you know how it feels you bastard, you thought you could rape my wife, I’ll kill you!!!” he yelled into Shyam’s face.

“Arnav Ji please stop!” cried Khushi, she put her hand on his shoulder, he looked up into her face, he could see her bleeding lip, he could see the mark on her cheek, on her neck where he had....he had, fury began to take over again, but looking at Khushi, seeing her trembling body he stopped, rage beating wildly within him, he got up and took her into his arms. She sobbed against his chest, shaking violently, trying so hard to get a grip on her emotions.

He held onto her tightly, If he had been even one minute late she would have been raped, because of his one mistake, just one stupid mistake where he had not been able to demand the truth from her. He could feel her tears straining his shirt, and as he looked up he saw Sardarji bringing a blanket and with him the police.

Shyam lay on the floor a bloody pulp, the police officer dragged him up from the floor and handcuffed him. “You are under arrest for attempting to rape Khushi Arnav Singh Raizada” and so saying they took him away.

Khushi began to move away from Arnav’s arms, but they tightened around her.

“Arnav ji let me move back, I’m ok” she took a step away, but as she looked around the room and the state she was in, panic tripped in her heart once again, she took two deep breaths and rubbed her hand in circular motions to take away the building terror, it was a lie, this surely had not been about to happen to her, the fear was hot and bright in her stomach and sweat slicked over her skin, she wanted to run, to crawl away into a hole away from the shame and the dirtiness she felt as Arnav moved towards her, seeing her state, he saw her whimper in pain, his hand reached to grab her, but she seemed to have lost all awareness of where she was, she began to scream, as she tried to pull away from him and went skidding to the floor in her attempt to run, she screamed and screamed in fear, her breath was hot as she got up to run once again only to have her vision go gray and hazy. Dimly, somewhere far away she heard Arnav’s voice, she felt herself sway, then slide straight into the black, dark world.

Arnav managed to grab her before she hit the floor, he sank into ground with her, cradling her in his arms “Khushi, Khushi, hey, come on, come back” he begged. He felt like a lifetime had passed in those few moments he checked her pulse, it was still beating, and he breathed a sigh of relief. He rested his cheek against hers, one lonely tear fell onto her cheek, this was all his fault. Lying her gently on the floor he got up, he then lifted her into his arms and looked at Sardarji with eyes full of pain.

“Son, everything will be ok, we got here in time, come on I’ll take you to a different room” so saying Sardarji led him out of the room.

Chapter 18

Arnav kept an eye on her, it was the middle of the night but he refused to leave her bedside, she was sleeping since she fainted, the doctor had been and had said that she needed plenty of rest, she had, had a shock and needed to recover from it. He looked at his Khushi, his heart breaking at what she had been through, she had been restless throughout the time she slept, she would jerk suddenly, until he gently soothed her pain away. His eyes finally began to droop, and laying his head next to her, whilst sitting on the chair, he fell asleep.

Oh God she was so afraid, the silky feeling of fear slipped through her, she could feel him on top of her and she couldn’t get him off, he would rape her and then there would be nothing left for her to do but to die. She struggled vehemently against him, hoping against all odds he would get off her, the plea was a scream in her head, it was like she couldn’t even scream out loud, she was trying so hard to scream but she couldn’t seem to make even a sound. His hands were on her now, they were creeping up her arms, pinning her arms down, she couldn’t get loose, please someone, please help me shouted a little voice in her head. she tried to make herself push him away, she wept, she pleaded, she gave a broken cry of pain but nothing worked. She finally closed her eyes tight and tried to go somewhere far away, where she would not feel the pain, where she would have no idea what was going on.

She wrenched herself out of the dream, someone was pinning her down, she couldn’t breathe, there was no air, she flailed out, using her legs to kick whatever it was that was in her way, but he wasn’t letting go, no her brain screamed not again.

“KHUSHI! KHUSHI! STOP IT ITS ME!!!” yelled Arnav and then lowered his voice “Khushi, come back its Arnav, he could see her eyes wild and bright with tears, but he saw her realise that she was safe, and as she calmed down he pressed her close against him, willing the warmth back into her body, her fear had him by the throat, he felt like bashing the walls, breaking anything and everything, but he continued to rock her gently “you’re alright, your fine Khushi, I’m here, I’m with you” .

She became limp and slowly wrapped her shaking arms around him, allowing his warmth to sweep into her. He felt the worst of it ebb, it ripped at him, what had nearly happened to her, his eyes were dark with emotion and the desire to kill, but he continued to hold her. He drew her away from him, he gently moved the wisp of hair, and kissed her on her forehead, on her cheeks and on her eyes.

“I need a shower” he heard her whisper gently. His hands fisted, anger that she felt dirty, that she was so scared, but he took a deep breath.

“Go on Khushi have your shower, I’ll help you to the cubicle” he helped her up and supported her all the way to the shower cubicle. Once she had gone inside her, he took the clothes that sardarji had left for her and laid them out on the bed.

She came out in a towel, her hair was dripped wet, he felt the desire and banked it, she was so beautiful. His Khushi, his one and only. But he could see the brusies marring her skin, it pained him to see them there, but there was nothing he could do but regret, regret at every decision he had thought was right, regret at every move he had made from the point that he had dragged her to the mandhir to now.

Khushi quickly glanced at him, he wasn’t looking, she could take her clothes and go back, she could see him standing stiffly, turned away from her. Did he feel as disgusted with her and she felt with herself? She tried to control the sob that made its way through her lips, he turned to look back at her. She looked so lonely and so sad.

“Are you feeling better Khushi?” he asked.

Wary of him, self-conscious of herself, she replied meekly “I’m fine, Arnav ji, now that everything has cleared up, your under no obligation to stay, you can go, I’m tired, I’ll sleep for a while”.

“Am I really that bad? That you would think that now that everything is over and done I would leave you? Have I managed to fall so badly in your eyes that you would think I would leave you like this here?” he said as she looked up. She saw the anger, black waves of it as he came towards her, so she shut her eyes, blocking his face.

She felt his hands on her shoulder’s “God Khushi, when I thought he might have...when I heard you screa...” he let go of her, fisting his hands, he was having difficulty explaining himself and was making the situation worse as he saw her crying silently. He had done that, he had caused all this pain to her, but he would wipe it all away, he wouldn’t go anywhere, not tonight not ever.

Slowly, every so slowly her lowered his lips to hers, he caught her sobs and laid his hand on her heart, it beat frantically. “look at me, think of me, I’ll make you forget everything, I’ll love you until you forget everything, I love you Khushi” he murmured, laying her on the bed, he made love to her, erasing all the horror she had faced.
